President Muhammadu Buhari said he was shocked and saddened when he learnt about the tragic event that killed several Nigerians at a football viewing centre in Calabar, Cross River State, on Thursday night.
The president in a statement on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, commiserated with the government and people of Cross River State as well as football fans nationwide over the unfortunate incident.
President Buhari commended the state government for the prompt action in setting up a commission of inquiry into the incident and offering assistance to the victims and their families.
Buhari offered his "deepest condolences" to the family and friends of the young victims whose sudden demise he described as a big blow not only to their families, but also to the football-loving nation.
The president prayed that God Almighty grant the souls of the departed eternal rest and comfort all those mourning their irreparable loss.
