NDLEA arrests 11 suspected drug traffickers in Edo

The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested 11 suspected drug traffickers in the state in August.

The suspects are Rita Ominu, Paulina Edwin, Mary Sunday Ana Oghogho Ijeoma Udi, Friday Omorodion, Paulinus Osagha, Anthony Augustine, Mohammed Dahiru, Ali Abdul and Justina Mensin.

The command also destroyed four cannabis farms measuring 1.692645 hectares estimated to yield 248,088kg in Ovia North East and Etsako Local Government Areas of the state.

The state NDLEA Commander, Buba Wakawa, who disclosed this yesterday in Benin, said the command also seized 452.36kg of cannabis as well as tramadol and diazepam tablets.

He said the arrested suspected drug traffickers were  five males and six females, adding that in their statements they owned up to the crime.

According to him, the problem of drug abuse in the state is posing a major challenge to families, adding that most youths who are hooked on drugs engaged in theft, armed robbery, cultism and other criminal activities.

Buba assured that the suspects would soon be charged to court.

One of the suspects, Rita Ominu, who was arrested in Owan-West Local Government, said she got involved in drug trafficking to raise money to pay her medical bills.

“l am 37-years-old. I dropped out of school in Junior  Secondary II due to lack of money. I learnt hair dressing but due to health challenge a friend introduced me to the sale of tramadol and cannabis. It was my quest for money to pay my medical bills that led me into drug trafficking,” she said.
