The Director General of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Dr. Nasiru Mohammed Ladan, has said the directorate will give empowering training slots to 3,700 youths in all the states of the federation.
Dr. Ladan stated this when the new national leadership of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) visited the directorate’s head office in Abuja.
Ladan told the NYCN to send in the names of youths from across the nation to benefit from the training.
He said, “We are ready, you can send their names to us. 70 per cent of them will be trained in cosmetology, while the remaining 30 per cent will be trained in other trades. We are ready to settle them because our aim is to reduce unemployment as much as possible.”
Ladan said the directorate would not limit itself to youth training and empowerment, but that it would play active role in exporting jobs through its portal.
“We are looking beyond just providing employment because government alone cannot do it, likewise the private sector; we are even looking at the possibility of exporting labour through our portal, and by so doing, the NDE will be the clearing house for anybody looking for someone to be employed from Nigeria,” he said.
He further said the arrangement would reduce human traffickers from deceiving young men and women with non-existing job offers abroad.
“A lot of these young men and women being lured abroad lose their lives trying to get to Europe through the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea. We are trying to minimise that so that if they are going, they will go legally and travel in dignity and ensure that they receive the wages they are supposed to be receiving in those countries because we will be monitoring them,” the DG said. Earlier, the National President of NYCN, Comrade Bello Bala Shagari said the visit was to explore areas of partnership with the NDE towards youth empowerment for decent job opportunities and self reliance.
