The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has warned radio and television stations in the country against announcing unofficial results of today’s supplementary elections in some states.
Speaking at a news conference in Abuja yesterday, NBC’s Director General, Mallam Is’haq Modibbo Kawu, said the broadcast regulatory agency would not take kindly to unofficial broadcast of results by radio and television stations.
“As we go into the 2019 governorship and state Houses of Assembly election re-runs, we want to use this opportunity to warn all broadcast outfits across the length and breadth of this country to stay within the NBC code and stay away from unofficial broadcast of results.
“Only INEC has the final say in result announcement and the broadcast media shouldn’t descend so low to announce results not authenticated by INEC,” Kawu said.
He said any broadcast station found contravening NBC’s code on election coverage would be fined and might even be shut, depending on the gravity of the offence.
He disclosed that many of the 45 stations fined after the presidential election for breaching NBC code had paid their fines. He also said some of them appealed against the fine while one of them went beyond the DG to complain but the NBC stood its ground.
Mallam Modibbo Kawu said the commission did not revoke GOTV’s cable license as being speculated.
