National Stadium swimming pools in poor shape

The House Committee on Sports visited the facilities in 2012 and promised to facilitate the repair of the pools which dried up three years ago.
A pool attendant in the stadium, who would not want his name in print, said that the condition of the pools had affected national swimmers.
“Swimmers now go to other places like the Teslim Balogun Stadium and pay to swim,’’ the attendant said.
Wemimo Adebamo-Raja, an Ex-Swimmer, said the condition of the pools in the National Stadium was pathetic, adding that this had distorted the Swimming Federation’s programmes.
Adebamo-Raja, who represented Lagos State at the 1973 edition of the National Sports Festival, regretted the current state of the swimming pools.
According to the veteran swimmer, the situation calls for pro-active efforts by government to save the facilities from further decay and to provide athletes with  cheaper training sessions.
She urged the National Sports Commission (NSC) to declare a state of emergency on the swimming pools.
Adebamo-Raja said, “The swimming pools should be among the commission’s priorities as Commonwealth Games is just some months away.”  (NAN)
