Residents of Birnin Kebbi, in Kebbi State, have foiled an attempt by a three-man motorcycle theft syndicate to snatch a machine from an Okada rider.
Daily Trust gathered that the incident occurred hours after the recent visit of the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Logistics and Supply, Ibrahim Mamman Tsafe, in continuation of his tour to states under his zone.
The DIG was in company of the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 10, Bala Hassan.
Witnesses in Birnin Kebbi said the three suspects, driving in a Toyota car, stopped the commercial motorcyclist around Halliru Abdu roundabout and asked him to lead them to Sir Yahaya roundabout.
“From there, they (syndicate) asked the Okada man to take them back to the same Halliru Abdu roundabout, pretending to have forgotten something in town and forced the Okada man to surrender his motorcycle to one of them.
“The other gang members attempted to run away in their car after their gang member left with the motorcycle, but the Okada man raised an alarm, jumped into the car through the window and shouted for help as they dragged and drove off with him, hanging on the window of the car up to the old motor park.
“The Okada man succeeded in turning the car steering into a ditch, which attracted policemen from a nearby bank who came and arrested the suspects. They called for reinforcement and prevented the irate crowd from lynching the suspects,” he said.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Nafiu Abubakar, when contacted, said the command is yet to receive the report.
“I will call you back as soon as we receive report of the incident from Birnin Kebbi Division, who were said to have arrested the suspects,” he said.
The Commissioner of Police, Danladi Mshelbwala, during the DIG’s visit, said his command “has zero tolerance to crimes in the state,” adding that, “the morale of the officers and men of the command remains very high.
He said it is also on record that Kebbi State Command has the lowest crime rate in the country.
The CP said his command is enjoying good working relationship with other sister security agencies, the state and local governments and expressed appreciation to them for their continued support to the command.
