Two suspected armed robbers were killed on Monday by angry residents of Biogbolo community, in Yenagoa LGA of Bayelsa State, while another was left severely injured.
It was gathered that the incident, which occurred on Monday afternoon, caused a stir and heavy vehicular traffic along the popular Mbiama-Yenagoa road, until men of the police command in the state intervened and rescued the injured suspected criminal.
A five-man gang suspected to be criminals, was said to be terrorising the area and robbing business owners around the Otiotio/Erepa business district, majorly populated by Hausa traders.
But the suspected robbers ran out of luck when they tried to rob a passerby who was at the time having only N1000 on him, it was gathered. He was said to have raised an alarm which alerted traders and residents around.
The two suspects killed and other gang members believed to be in their late 20s, were pursued when the people noticed they were criminals.
A witness, who sought for anonymity, told our reporter that the suspects were one among several gangs terrorising the area, explaining that people suffer a lot from them on a daily basis.
He said: “They rob and go free. The police are not doing anything about it; they move freely with firearms in the state. Even if they are caught they’re released in no time.
“Now that the people have decided to ensure that their community is safe, at least we will be free for some time. This is the first and we will continue. They rob people and cross to the other side of the community every day. We are on red alert now.”
The police command spokesman, SP Asinim Butswat, who confirmed the report, said two suspected armed robbers killed by mobs have been recovered and one suspect arrested is in police custody.
He said a locally made pistol was recovered from them, while the identities of those dead were yet to be ascertained.
