The man, according to police sources, was said to have learnt how to open safes and tamper with machines through an internet search engine.
The sources also said that the man was apprehended while hiding inside a bank’s toilet following a distress call from the bank that money was stolen from their ATM.
It was gathered that immediately policemen went to the scene and made a check round the banking hall and other places within the bank, it was discovered that the suspect came in through the ceiling.
“It was discovered that a ceiling through which he came in was removed and when police officers looked further they saw the CCTV camera monitor was tampered with. Then they moved to the toilets where they discovered that some doors were locked from behind, they were forced opened and the suspect was found,” he source said.
The source also hinted that the suspect was known to be a burger seller in one of the popular recreation parks in the FCT.
When contacted, FCT police spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent Hyelhira Altine Daniel, confirmed the arrest.
She said that upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, saying he learnt how to open a safe and tamper with machines on You Tube.
“He removed the sum of N6,873,000 and concealed same in bags, which were found on him. The money, hand gloves, screws, chisels, face mask and spanners of various sizes were recovered from him,” she stated.
The PPRO said that the suspect confessed that he entered the bank about 2 a.m. through one of the windows.
She said that investigation into the case is still ongoing and expressed joy with the bank’s management for contacting the police on time.
