An Isolo, Lagos, chief magistrate court has sentenced a 34- year-old man, Abayomi Adebayo, to four years imprisonment for stabbing his neighbour, Emeka Mbanugo, on the head and rendering him blind.
Both the convict and the complainant reside at No. 23, Goloba Street, in the Isolo area of the state.
Adebayo was said to have stabbed the complainant with a bottle on the eye during a fracas.
The prosecutor, Mr Oje Uagbale, told the court that a quarrel had arisen when the convict urinated in front of Mbanugo’s apartment and the latter demanded from Adebayo why he would do so.
Uagbale said that in the process, Adebayo took a bottle, broke it and used it to stab Mbanugo in an eye. The complainant, he added, was rushed to the Isolo General Hospital where doctors confirmed that the eye had been damaged permanently.
“Adebayo was then arrested and charged before the Isolo magistrate’s court, where he pleaded not guilty,” he said.
The presiding magistrate, Mrs O.A. Teluwo, initially granted Adebayo bail and ordered he be remanded in prison pending when he would perfect his bail conditions.
Mrs Teluwo then slated the case for trial. During the subsequent trial, Adebayo changed his plea from not guilty to guilty and Uagbale asked the court to sentence him accordingly to serve as deterrent to others who might want to attempt such a dastardly act.
The court consequently found Adebayo guilty on the two- count charge and sentenced him to four years in jail.
