One Mustapha Adamu has allegedly chopped off the right hand of his neighbour, identified as Adamu Mohammed, with a cutlass during a scuffle at Anguwar Gede in Gwagwalada, Abuja.
A resident of the area, Ibrahim Salihu, said the incident happened last weekend during a misunderstanding between the victim and some youths in the area.
He alleged that trouble started when the victim warned the suspect and his group of friends against smoking Indian hemp in the area, which got the youths angry and one of the boys engaged him in a scuffle.
“The man only advised the boy and his friends against polluting the area with Indian hemp smoking, and a quarrel started,” he said.
Salihu said the duo got engaged in a heated argument and the victim allegedly used a stick to hit the suspect on the head, while the suspect in return, pulled out a cutlass from his flowing robe and chopped off the victim’s right hand.
“Actually, the victim tried to use his hand to block the cutlass, but it cut off the hand,” he said.
He said some residents attempted to arrest and hand the suspect over to the police but he escaped.
The victim, was however, taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital in Gwagwalada, where he is still receiving treatment.
Our reporter learnt that the vice chairman of the council, Alhaji Kasim Mohammed, accompanied by the secretary of the council, Hajiya Aminat Ada Alimi, paid a visit to the victim at the hospital on Monday, where he is receiving treatment.
When contacted, the Gwagwalada Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Wilson Dankwano, confirmed the incident, saying the police were making efforts to ensure that the suspect, who is on the run, is arrested.
“We are making efforts to arrest the suspect because he is on the run, and I am assuring you that we will get him,” he said.
