Lawyers under the aegis of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikeja branch have staged a protest against the Lagos State Government over its recent increment in the land use charges in the state.
The protest which was the culmination of the seven-day ultimatum issued by the lawyers’ body on March 7, 2018 also witnessed the participation of rights activists from different Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), student bodies and market women.
As early as 7am yesterday, the protesters who gathered at the NBA Ikeja branch Secretariat marched through the Oba Akinjobi Way along the GRA to Ikeja under-bridge on Awolowo road. They later moved on to Allen Avenue before heading to the state House of Assembly and the Lagos Governor’s Office in Alausa, Ikeja.
The NBA Ikeja Branch Chairman, Adeshina Ogunlana, who addressed the protesters, said the state government introduced an oppressive tax regime.
The Secretary General of the Joint Action Front (JAF), Abiodun Aremu, said, “We note, from our preliminary study of the obnoxious Land Use charges that the working people and the poor masses of traders, women and artisans would be the greatest victims of the wicked policy.”
At the Governor’s Office, Alausa, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, received the protesters’ petition on behalf of the governor.
