Kano state government has reiterated commitment to investing in its healthcare sector with a view to deliver world class healthcare services to its people, and to also reduce to the barest minimum the rate of child and maternal mortality in the state.

The state governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje stated this yesterday in Kano while declaring open the 2018 annual health summit of the Department of State services (DSS) at the coronation hall of the state’s government house.

Ganduje who was represented by his deputy and commissioner for agriculture, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, said the vision of his administration is to see that the state attains its maximum potential such that its people can have access to the best healthcare facilities available not only in Nigeria but anywhere in the world.

“In our determination to deliver on our campaign promises and ensure that Kano people benefit maximally in healthcare delivery, the present administration has embarked on many beneficial and far reaching healthcare interventions raging from infrastructure and equipment upgrades, healthcare financing, to manpower development.

Speaking further Ganduje disclosed that in the last three years the government was able to recruit over 3000 health workers who are currently manning various healthcare facilities across the 44 local government areas of the state.

He identified completion and commissioning of two ultra-modern specialists hospitals, Muhammadu Buhari specialists’ hospital and Sheikh Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu pediatric hospitals both equipped with state of the art equipment as one of his greatest achievements in the health sector.

Speaking on the theme of the summit, Director medical services DSS, Dr Anne C Okorafor said the summit was meant to sensitise the operatives on the approaches open to them for exploitation to improve their health and general wellbeing.

The theme of the summit was: Achieving a health productive workforce: positive health seeking behavior and healthy life expectancy.

Okorafor said the theme was deliberately chosen to draw the attention of the service personnel to the need for them to be conscious of their health status and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
