… husband, wife emerge 1st Nigerians at the finish line
A sum of $50,000 was given to David Barmasai Tumo, a Kenyan athlete yesterday when he emerged winner of the 42-kilometre 2020 Access Bank Lagos City marathon race. He also got an additional record-breaking fee of $20,000.
Tumo’s 2:10:23 hours’ time was 4 mins 41 seconds faster than Abraham Kiprotich’s record in 2018. Organizers rewarded him with the additional money for breaking the record.
The Access Bank sponsored race started at 6:30am in front of the National Stadium, Surulere to the Third Mainland Bridge, Osborne road, Parkview and Lekki/Ikoyi link bridge and ended at the Eko Atlantic City, Victoria Island.
The first woman to cross the finish line was another Kenyan, Sharon Jemutai Cherop in 2:31:40 hours.
Both Tumo and Cherop won the grand prize of $50,000 each while the second and third place winners took home $40,000 and $30,000 respectively.
The first Nigerian man and woman to complete the 42km race Emmanuel Gyang and his wife, Deborah Pam got married in 2019 and has competed as a couple at the seventh edition of the Okpekpe 10km International Road Race and the Abeokuta Road Race where only Gyang participated.
Gyang, a plateau state athlete finished 33rd overall with a time of 2:25.30secs and his wife, Pam finished 14th overall in the women category with a time of 2:45.17secs.
