Jigawa to vaccinate 1m livestock in 2019

The Jigawa state government is targeting about 1 million livestock across the state during the 2019 vaccination exercise, an official of the state has said.

Dr Abdullahi Haruna, the Director of Veterinary Services, Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, made this known  to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse.

Haruna said that 500,000 cattle, 250,000 goats and sheep, 200,000 chicken and 2,000 dogs would be vaccinated during the year.

He explained that the cattle would be vaccinated against Contagious Bovine Pleuro Pneumonia (CBPP), while the sheep and goats would be vaccinated against Pester de Petites Prominante (PPR).

The director added that dogs would be vaccinated against Rabies, while the chicken would be vaccinated against Newcastle Disease (NCD).

“The exercise is to ensure that livestock is vaccinated to promote production and consumption of wholesome meat and milk in the state and beyond,” Haruna added.

Haruna told NAN that the state had earmarked more than N10 million for the procurement of vaccines and other items for a hitch-free exercise.
