Japan injects N8 billion into Nigeria’s water sector

Mr Ryuichi Shoji, Japanese ambassador to Nigeria said while handling over drilling equipment and other water facilities to the federal government that the donation was part of an aid-in-grant programme to Nigeria.
Shoji said that the equipment handed over to Nigeria to support rural water projects in Bauchi and Katsina were worth N842 million while another project that seek to enhance capacity of rural water supply and sanitation centre at the National Water Resources Institute, Kaduna also got equipment worth N1.08 billion. “In the area of rural water supply starting with Oyo state in 2000, JICA have supported ten states in Nigeria including  Kano, Yobe, Bauch, Katsina, Eungu, Ondo, Kebbi, Niger and Taraba with the total amount of over N5 billion,” he said.
He noted that with the support, the percentage of rural water supply coverage in the in the benefiting states would be increased and the incidence of water borne diseases in rural areas would be decreased.
Mrs Sarah Reng Ochekpe, Minister of Water Resources noted that the federal government in meeting the challenges of access to clean and safe water had adopted several strategies to improve service delivery in the sector.
