Issa Rae to produce musical, star in ‘The Dolls’

Author of ‘The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl’ Issa Rae, will be working again with the writer-producer, of HBO’s ‘Insecure’ Amy Aniobi.

This time they are working on a romantic musical feature ‘Love in America’ which Universal Studios has picked and Rae will produce through her production banner, ColorCreative. The duo will be working with Rae’s production partner, Deniese Davis which will launch the company into its debut into feature film.

ColorCreative had previously worked in the network and cable spheres, partnering with companies such as Anonymous Content, BET and HBO.

According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), details for ‘Love in America’ are being kept under lock and key, but Aniobi will pen the script with newcomers Khiyon Hursey and Harrison Richlin, while Universal’s Executive VP Production, Erik Baiers and Creative Executive, Mike Pryce will oversee for the studio.

“Love in America is the second Universal project to be announced in recent weeks that Aniobi is working on. She is also attached to write a dramedy titled ‘Bye Bye Bye,’ which will be produced by Kevin Hart and CJ Entertainment and was picked up by Universal in November. Before working on Insecure, Aniobi served as an executive producer on 2 Dope Queens, a consulting producer on Brothers in Atlanta and a story editor on Silicon Valley,” THR reported.

Meanwhile, it has also been announced that Rae star will be starring in HBO’s ‘The Dolls’ alongside Laura Dern of ‘Star Wars: The last Jedi.’ The series, written by Rae, Kittrell and Aniobi, is inspired by true events, which chronicle the aftermath of the 1983 Christmas Eve riots in two Arkansas towns as a result of Cabbage Patch Dolls. The series explores subjects like class, race, privilege and the questions – what it takes to be a good mother.

Rae has received Golden Globe nominations for two years in a row for her work on ‘Insecure,’ which she also executive produces. The author of bestseller, ‘The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl’ recently finished production on a comedy for Universal ‘Little,’ which also stars Marsai Martin and Regina King.
