Sunshine Stars forward, Israel Abia is the leading goal scorer with seven goals in 11 matches played in the ongoing 2019/2020 Nigeria Professional Football League season.
Closely following him is Enyimba hit man, Victor Mbaoma and Katsina United’s Tasi’u Lawal who are both on six goals respectively.
Abia Warriors’ Jimoh Oni is third on the list with five goals while Akwa United’s Ndifreke Effiong, Dakkada’s Isaac George, Lobi Stars’ Sikiru Alimi and Plateau United’s Ibrahim Mustapha are all on 4 goals each.
However, a total of 217 goals have been scored since the league kicked off on November 3, 2019.
In the same vein, Plateau United who have maintained the top spot since the league began will begin 2020 still as table leaders on 21 points after winning six games, losing three and drawing two games.
Lobi Stars and Rivers United are battling to displace the Jos based side as both sides are on 18 points each.
Meanwhile, Enugu Rangers against all expectations is sharing the bottom spot with Nasarawa United as both sides are on six points each.
Rangers who have been inconsistent so far this season both at home and at the continental stage have only six points from eight games so far, though they have outstanding games due to their commitment in CAF competition.
The Flying Antelopes have won just a game, drawing three and losing four while Nasarawa United have lost 6 games having played 10 matches.
However, as action resumes on January 5, Akwa United midfielder Ifeanyi Ifeanyi is optimistic that they will make their fans proud in 2020.
“We will always give our best. We didn’t start the season very well, but I believe we will end very well.
“They should just keep supporting us and believing in the team. It is God who makes everything possible and our prayer is for God to help us achieve our aim this season,” he said.
Ifeanyi played 82 minutes in Akwa United’s 1-0 home victory over Lobi Stars on Sunday – their third straight win since the arrival of Kennedy Boboye.
