The Nigerian Army yesterday received a consignment of weapons and ammunition from Slovakia, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International airport Abuja.
The consignment said to be mostly ammunition, landed Abuja around 3 pm in a charted Boeing 747-400 cargo plane and started offloading the ammunition in what appeared to be hundreds of crates.
The Head, Nigerian Army Operation Monitoring Team, Brigadier General Robert Aiyenigba told journalists at the airport that the delivery is first in a series of weapons and ammunition to be delivered soon to the Nigeria Army.
He explained that the weapons and ammunition coming from Slovakia was procured mainly to boost the capabilities of troops fighting insurgency in the North East and banditry in other parts of the country.
He also said the ammunition was for light weapons, medium weapons, and some heavy weapons in the Nigerian Army inventory.
