The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos has so far registered 191, 289 voters in the continuous voters’ registration exercise which was flagged off on April 27, 2017, checks by Daily Trust at the INEC office have shown.
So far, the commission has distributed 17, 322 uncollected permanent voters’ card (PVCs) from the conclusion of 2015 election till date.
Spokesman of INEC, Mr. Femi Akinbiyi in a chat with our correspondent disclosed that the commission has also issued 9,203 PVCs for those who transferred their voters’ cards to Lagos or from one place to another within Lagos.
He stated that 25, 244 voters had their cards replaced, adding that while the exercise still continues, the commission had decentralized the registration areas.
He said when the continuous voters’ registration commenced in 2017, the registration areas were limited to the 20 local government offices of INEC in the state but it has expanded to 50 centres.
Akinbiyi said, “As at the time we commenced the exercise, we limited the registration to INEC local government offices but later we upgraded. As am talking to you now, we have a total of 50 centres across Lagos state where people can register”.
He explained that the commission had engaged in rotational registration where the registration areas in each of the local governments are rotated, adding that this is being done in partnership with stakeholders in the LGs.
The INEC spokesman appealed to those who are yet to register to take advantage of the decentralization and register at their convenient time.
“We have moved the centres closer to the people. We have synergized with the stakeholders to announce to them when it is their turn for registration and this will also help in bringing the registration closer to the people. People can go in anytime it is convenient for them. We want to appeal to them to use this opportunity to go and register and in addition”, he added.
