Immigration Service to check migration of illegal aliens into Borno

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) said on Monday that it had stepped up surveillance to check the migration of illegal aliens into Borno through land borders.

The state’s Comptroller of NIS, Mr Bello Jahun, made this known at a news conference in Maiduguri.

Jahun explained that the service had worked out modalities to ease cumbersome processes in the issuance of international passports in conformity with international best practice.

“The service is determined to ensure that all Nigerian refugees in neighbouring countries return to their ancestral homes with dignity.

“We are also collaborating with the government of the Republic of Chad and UN refugee agencies to enhance border administration,” he said.

The comptroller disclosed that recently the service had facilitated the repatriation of thousands of Nigerian refugees from Cameroun through the Banki boarder community.

According to him, the NIS has ensured effective monitoring of land boarders, a development which resulted to a significant decline in the rate of cross-border crimes.

He added that the service would investigate complaints of alleged extortion by its personnel.

He reiterated the commitment of the service to protecting the country’s entry points.
