Unknown persons yesterday killed a Catholic priest, Reverend David Tanko, at Kpankufu village along the Wukari Road on his way to Kofai Amadu village in Taraba State.
His burnt body and vehicle were later found at the scene where he and other commuters were attacked.
The Special Adviser to Taraba Governor Darius Ishaku, Mr Bala Dan Abu, who released photos of the burnt body and vehicle of late priest alleged that he was murdered by suspected Tiv militia.
He said the clergyman, a Jukun by tribe, was on his way back from Takum where he had attended a peace meeting before he was attacked and killed.
It was gathered that following the incident, motorists had abandoned both Takum -Wukari and Rafin Kada Roads located in the southern part of the state.
The spokesman of the state police command, DSP David Misal, could not be reached for comment as he did not answer phone calls by our reporter.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, last night expressed deep concern over the recent incidents of attacks on clergymen in some parts of the country.
He directed the Commissioners of Police in all the states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory to henceforth pay special attention to the clergy and increase security around worship centres nationwide.
The Force spokesman, DCP Frank Mba, in a statement, the IG ordered the Commissioner of Police in Taraba State to fish-out the killers of Rev. Father David Tanko who, according to him, was murdered by “unknown persons in the early hours of 29th August 2019, at Kpankufu Village along Wukari Road on his way to Kofai Amadu Village in Taraba State.
Mba said the IGP condoled with the Catholic Family in Nigeria over the incident.
He said the IG further directed the DIG in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department to provide additional forensic and other investigative assets to the Taraba State Command to aid investigations into the incident.
Mba also said the IGP enjoined the people to be calm and give maximum support to the Police in the bid towards unravelling the criminals, their motives and circumstances surrounding the killing of the priest.
