Iconic director, Amaka Igwe dies

Foremost director, writer and actress of Nigeria’s Nollywood movies, Amaka Igwe has died after an asthma attack in Enugu on Monday. She was reportedly in the coal city with her husband, Charles Igwe, for pre-production of an Igbo series when the incidence occurred.


Online news portal, Bellanaija, reported that, “Ibinabo Fiberesima, the President of the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria, has confirmed the news.”

Also, a release by Ayeni Adekunle, Black House Media boss, said she suffered an asthma attack and was immediately rushed to the hospital after initial interventions had failed.


She was the creator of favourite television series, ‘Fuji House of Commotion’. Mrs. Igwe was renowned for her outstanding works like television series of the early 90s, ‘Checkmate’, popular Nollywood films, ‘Violated’, ‘Rattle Snake’ and award-winning, ‘Forever’.

Igwe was one of the contemporary filmmakers who have had their films on celluloid which brought about ‘A Barber’s Wisdom’, which was part of M-Net’s new direction on film project with Nigerian producers.

Her films brought her acclaim from all over the world. Mrs. Igwe is survived by three children, her husband of 21 years and aged mother.

She was the founder and CEO of Top Radio 90.9FM, Amaka Igwe Studios, and recently-launched Q Entertainment Networks.

Also the founder of BoBTV Expo which held its sixth edition (2009) and ninth edition (2012) in Abuja, Amaka Igwe will be remembered as one of the visionaries and pioneers of modern Nigerian TV drama and film productions.
