Husband killing: Judge’s absence stalls Maryam Sanda’s trial

Maryam Sanda

The absence of the trial judge in the murder charge against Maryam Sanda has further stalled the trial.

Maryam is being tried before the FCT High Court in Maitama for allegedly killing Bello, her husband, who was a nephew of former PDP chairman, Alhaji Bello Halliru Muhammad in 2017.

She was docked alongside her brother, AliyuSanda; her mother, MaimunaAliyu and her housemaid, SadiyaAminu, who were charged with assisting her to conceal the evidence by cleaning the blood of the deceased from the scene of the crime.

However, the court upheld the submission filed by the three other defendants and discharged and acquitted them of the offence levelled against them by the police.

The trial judge, Justice Halilu Yusuf had subsequently fixed May 6 for the opening of defence for Maryam, after dismissing a no-case submission filed by her. But parties were told on May 6 that Justice Yusuf was on election tribunal assignment in Ogun State, as such, June 11 was agreed by counsels for the case to continue.

The case, however, suffered another setback yesterday when parties were told that the judge was still in Ogun State.

A court official told our reporter that September 10 has been fixed for the trial to continue. He noted that this was in consideration of the fact that judges’ annual vacation would commence in early July and that by September when the courts will resume, it was expected that the trial judge would have concluded with the election tribunal assignment he went for in Ogun state.
