My name is Hajara Abdullahi, I am from Gunduma under Karshi Development Area in Karu LGA of Nasarawa State and married to the village head of Gunduma.
What do you do for a living?
I am a business woman. I prepare groundnut cake (kulikuli) for sale to traders and also to consumers, who buy in small quantity. I have benefited from the profit I make from this business immensely.
How long have you been in the bussiness?
I have been in this business for over 20 years.
What is the procedure for preparing groundnut cake?
I buy groundnut and fry it. After frying it, I take it to the grounding machine to ground and extract the oil from the groundnut. After that, the oil will be separated, I will make a fire with firewood, place my frying pan with oil on it and when the oil is hot, I mould the grounded groundnut with my hands to the shape I want and put it on the heated oil to fry.
Has it been the same process over the years?
No, before now, I used grounding stones which is usually tedious. Then, I started using mortar and pestle to pound and then use my hands to squeeze the oil out. But now, I am grateful to the white man’s invention of grounding machine which has made everything easier for me. It grounds and extracts the oil for me which is the most difficult aspect of the job.
What quantity do you prepare daily?
I make 30 measures of groundnuts per day.
Apart from the groundnut cake what else can you get from the process?
I get groundnut oil which I equally sell too to complement my profits.
How much profit do you make in a day?
I make from N500 and above daily, although it depends on the quality of groundnut I use. Some groundnuts are of higher quality than others and give you good returns. I also get about 10 bottles of groundnut oil from the 30 measures of groundnut I prepare.
How has the business helped you?
It has been helping me a lot. It provides me with little money of my own which takes care of my personal needs and also enables me to save some for later use.
