Gunmen suspected to be cultists Wednesday night killed two corps members and injured another one at Swali, Yenagoa in Bayelsa State.
Popoola Oluwatobi Olamide and George Onokpoma were killed while Anthony Gbenga was injured when the assailants invaded their residence in the area and opened fire on them.
The corps members were said to be attached to a private school, Victory Group of Schools, close to their residence.
While Olamide died on the spot, Onokpoma, who had reportedly struggled with the assailants before being shot, died while being taken to a hospital where Gbenga is currently being treated.
When newsmen visited the scene, there was thick blood on the floor and the room was riddled with bullets holes.
Neighbours said the suspected cultists, numbering about six, arrived the residence at about 10:30pm and began to shoot sporadically to scare the residents.
“We heard gunshots from the direction of the corps members’ room, one of the attacked corps members was heard shouting ‘Jesus’ repeatedly and asking what was their crime until another gun shot was fired and he was silenced.”
The State Commissioner of Police, Olusholla David, who visited the NYSC Secretariat in Yenagoa to meet with the State Coordinator, Mrs Lotto Bolade, expressed shock over the incident, saying “Nobody that will hear this incident that will not be shocked, corps members in the state may be scared but please i assure them that there will be improved security under my watch.”
Bolade said attacks on corps members in the state had become worrisome, adding that the NYSC had written to the state governor for improved security of corps members in the state.
The spokesman of the state police command, Asinim Butswat, in a statement, said a manhunt had been launched for the killers and that investigation was ongoing.
