Guardiola confirms Mendy’s return to action

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Benjamin Mendy will return to the Manchester City squad following a lengthy absence when his side face Burton Albion in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final today.

The France international has been sidelined since November with another knee injury, but was pictured in training yesterday ahead of facing Nigel Clough’s League One outfit.

City have effectively booked their place in February’s final at Wembley after securing a 9-0 win in the first leg at the Etihad Stadium a fortnight ago.

At his press conference, Guardiola revealed: “Benjamin is in the squad, he will travel with us. Maybe on the bench. The results say (we haven’t missed him) too much in the last two years but I miss him a lot.

“He’s played very few and all the talk, training practice, he’s not there. He will need time to adjust to what we need with his quality.”

Mendy last featured on November 11 during the 3-1 victory over Manchester United, but his return is a timely boost with City trailing Liverpool by four points in the Premier League.
