An advocacy group, Almajiri Child Right Initiative (ACRI) said it wants government to initiate policy that will bring an end to prevalent abuse of children under the Almajiri system.
The group’s Team Leader, Mohammadu Sabo Keana, disclosed this when he and some members of the group visited Daily Trust office in Abuja.
Keana said the group will launch ‘The Almajiri Child Right Day’ on Saturday, May 26, at world press conference in Abuja. He said the day will be observed annually to draw attention to the plight of millions of Almajiri and other vulnerable children across the country.
“We chose May 26 because it is a day before the Children’s Day which holds yearly on May 17.
He said the issue of out of school children and their abuse had been an issue in the northern parts of the country and Nigeria as a whole for decades.
“As a platform we have observed that not much has been done with a long term vision to bring the issue to an end or solve it in a more sustainable way,” he said.
