Gombe: After Goje, who’s next?

As the search for successor assumes greater significance, attention is increasingly focusing on Mohammed Dan Kwambo, the current Accountant  General of the Federation (AGF). By all accounts, the gentleman seems to enjoy the automatic support of the people of Gombe State. He seems to be the man with the dynamism, competence and credibility to step into the shoes of Danjuma Goje. His antecedents and credentials are unassailable because he has all it takes to sustain and built on the good performance record of Governor Danjuma Goje. As a young state with a promising future, Gombe State badly requires  qualitative leadership to translate democratic dividends from rhetoric into reality.

No one seems to oppose Dan Kwambo because his competence is widely acknowledged. The fact that his people are the one pushing his ambition clearly shows that he enjoys their confidence. He is not a politician and the people believe that he is the right man to deal with the challenges of development confronting Gombe State. When Governor Goje was elected in 2003, he retained Dan Kwambo as the Accountant General of Gombe State because of his competence, honestly, fearlessness and incorruptibility. When the former Obasanjo administration was looking for an Accountant General of the Federation to replace the occupant whose tenure had expired, it had no difficulty going for Dan Kwambo because he presented the qualities required of that office.

Since he became the Accountant General of the Federation, Dan Kwambo has brought pride to Gombe State because of his dynamism and integrity. His commitment to eliminate corruption in the civil service has achieved remarkable impact since he took over as the Accountant General of the Federation. Corruption is a major cancer halting the development of Nigeria and the service is critical to the achievement of government policies. The introduction of e-payment in government contracts has substantially reduced corruption in government business. The electronic payment system is major initiative that has been hailed widely.

An efficient civil service requires men of integrity like Dan Kwambo and since his appointment as AGF, he has introduced great changes that have made the service better. Public money is meant for development and we need men of integrity like Dan Kwambo to ensure public funds are not diverted to private pockets. We need men with integrity to make Nigeria move forward; we need them to make the future brighter. What more does Dan Kwambo have to prove about his experience, competence and integrity? He has set standard for the country civil service, which is widely perceived as too corrupt and indolent. The fact that former President Obasanjo had no hesitation recommending Dan Kwambo as Nigeria’s Accountant General speaks volumes of the man’s track record of integrity.

Luckily, Dan Kwambo has a combination of character, integrity, competence, experience and humility, which are the essential qualities required of any leader. Impressed by these credentials, it is not surprising why Dan Kwambo is rapidly becoming the focus of popular agitation to succeed Governor Danjuma Goje in 2011. With the pressure coming from the people for him to run, Dan Kwambo obliviously enjoys the  enormous good will of his people.

Why do the people of Gombe State love the Accountant General so much? By all accounts, his compassion for the under-privileged is the secret of his popularity. He never hesitates to assist anyone in distress. He has assisted many indigenes of Gombe State to secure admissions or employment. And another interesting thing about him is that he doesn’t discriminate against anyone. He is the bridge builder the people of Gombe state badly need at this critical stage of nation building. For anyone to enjoy such spontaneous love of his people, it means the Accountant General has certain qualities that are not common among power drunk leaders who treat the people as slaves. Democracy can only thrive when we elect leaders that truly enjoy the love of the people. And for that reason we need men like Dan Kwambo to sustain the tempo of development in Gombe state after Governor Danjuma Goje completes his two-term tenure in 2011.
