Two draft legislations, namely, the Cyber Security and Interception Bill and the Revised National Cyber Security Policy and Strategy are underway, as Ghana intensifies the campaign against cyber crimes.
The Bills, which are currently being fine-tuned by the Parliamentary Committee on Communication at the Parliament, are expected to help tackle potential threats in the country’s cyber space.
The legislatiions are expected to give legal backing to a soon to be established, Cyberspace Authority and provide the legal framework for cyber related issues in the country.
Ghana is increasingly concerned about cyber security and is committed to protecting personal and national information network.
Minister of Communications, Mrs. Ursula Owusu – Ekuful underscored the fact, stressing that unregulated cyber space posed a great deal of danger to cyber security.
In this light, the Minister urged both the private and public agencies to collaborate with other stakeholders to eliminate the threats.
“The lack of a dedicated and sustainable budget to fund cyber security activities had been a challenge.
“While the Electronics Transactions Act, 2008(Act772) and the Data Protection Act 2012(Act843) provide some provisions with respect to cyber crime and personal data protection. There is a lack of comprehensive cyber security law capable of addressing the current complexities of cyber crime and cyber security in the county, “ she said.
According to her, the use of the cyber space and telecommunications networks to commit crimes continue to pose serious challenges to law enforcement and security agencies.
The National Cyber Security Adviser, Dr. Albert Antwi – Boa Siako said, the legislatiions aside giving legality to the Cyber Security Authority, it will enhance collaboration and information sharing with international agencies.
