Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun says the Black Stars of Ghana are ‘deserved’ winners of the WAFU Cup of Nations after the Black Stars’ 4-1 thrashing of Nigeria in the final at the new Cape Coast Stadium on Sunday.
The FSV Mainz defender who took to twitter to express his opinions after the final match, also hailed the Nigerian side under Coach Salisu Yusuf for putting up spirited displays throughout the 16 day tournament.
“Well, what can I say? Nigeria’s lost, Ghana’s won, but our jollof is still the no.1. Congrats Black Stars, well deserved,” the hard-tackling central defender wrote.
Meanwhile, Akwa United midfielder Hafiz Aremu insists that Nigeria’s Home-Eagles must take the positives from their final defeat to Ghana.
The Westerlo FC of Lagos loanee was a surprise inclusion in Coach Salisu Yusuf’s squad for the tournament and was impressive for the Home Eagles, helping them record five clean sheets during the tournament only to capitulate 4-1 in the final.
“It is disappointing for us. We are not happy. We have lost when it mattered most and it is painful, we didn’t start the game well and I think we could have done better with the pressure we had in the closing stages of the first half,” the player noted.
