FOMWAN, Blair Institute hold mentorship for girl-child education

The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) and the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change have commenced a “Scoping Workshop on Girls’ Mentorship Project’ as part of activities to better the lots of Muslims girls in the country.

The National Ameerah of FOMWAN, Dr. Halimah Jibril, said the aim of the workshop was to develop templates with inputs from various stakeholders including partners from the Universities and members of FOMWAN Youth Development Committees.

According to her, the workshop was preparatory to the project to identify why girls were lagging behind even when they were in schools.

She said the mentorship programme would help girls explore their potentials to the fullest, especially in their educational pursuits and also to make positive impacts in the society.

“FOMWAN feels concerned about this because we see on all development indicators in Nigeria omen are lagging behind. For instance, education in Nigeria has the largest population of out of school children in the world and 60 per cent of this out of school children are girls and 60 per cent of them are in Northern Nigeria. Those are statistics that should send us thinking and is a call for action from all of us,” she said.

The Project Manager, Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, Ms. Olivia Caycley, said the institute was determined to provide access to quality education to young women especially in northern Nigeria.

She said the project was to help the girl-child in the north realize their potentials in education, entrepreneurship and other aspiration in the interest of the society and that the 24 mentors were drawn from the universities, secondary schools, FOMWAN and youth representatives.
