Over 500 hectares of rice farms in Ondewari and Okpotuwari communities in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have been submerged by flood.
The farmlands destroyed were cultivated by the state chapter of the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN) under the Federal Government and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Anchor Borrowers Programme.
Conducting journalists and CBN officials round the affected farmlands yesterday, the paramount ruler of Okpotuwari community, Chief Tiger Moses, lamented that they were expecting a bumper harvest before the flood ravaged their farmlands.
He said it was unfortunate that the huge resources sunk into the project had gone down the drain.
