The public awareness on broadband which is being championed by the Ministry of Communications Technology is also targeted at attracting investments to the country’s telecommunications sector even as the industry’s investment is expected to hit $50billion in few years to come.
Minister Omobola Johnson at a soft launch of ‘Broadband Campaign” tagged ‘Connected Nigeria, Connected Nigerians’ in Lagos said this target is achievable with activities centred around the implementation of national broadband programme.
According to the minister, the National Broadband 2013 -2018 is to see deployment of infrastructures that will improve connectivity which currently at 6-7per cent.
With the current $25billion investments Johnson noted that ICT sector is the highest contributor to the Nigeria’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at 8per cent year on year basis.
She said, “We need $25 billion more in the next few years into the country. As I speak with you, the Nigerian Communications Commission is going around, as the ministry also does, to win more investors into the country to boost broadband penetration in Nigeria.”
