Respite is coming the way of pupils of Anguwan Rogo Primary School of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State as it is getting six more classrooms to accommodate its nearly 4,000 pupils population.
Benue/Plateau Trust reports that six classrooms are now under construction by the Presidency under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which covers improvement in the education sector.
The 45-year old Primary school has been the only public school in the area that is accommodating six communities of Anguwan Rogo, Anguwan Rimi, Zinaria, Sukuwa, Ring Road and Hayingada.
With just 12 classrooms the school has to be divided into morning and evening segments to cater for the children in the communities.
Even with classes divided into eight groups (A-E) pupils are still squeezed into classrooms with some containing up to 80, which makes it difficult for the teachers to effectively teach.
The councillor representing Anguwan Rogo/Anguwan Rimi, Hon. Nasuru Mekeke Ali, who supervises the project, said the additional classrooms were meant to reduce congestion.
He said members of the community were delighted with the project as it would enhance the learning environment, adding “the project has been the prayer of the communities for many years’’.
Ali thanked the Presidency for embarking on the project and urged the communities to take proper care of all the structures in the school.
Malam Zubairu Shehu, the chairman Special Best Management Committee (SBMC), responsible for the maintenance of the school, said the communities commended the development, adding: “That is what we have been yearning for the past decades.
“Apart from the realisation of this project, our major problem is that with the growing population of communities surrounding the school, we have only one primary school which can’t accommodate our pupils. We are appealing to both federal and state governments to help provide another primary to decongest the existing one. We want government and other influential individuals to help us buy another land for a new primary school.”
