Until his death, Prof. Iyayi was a committed ASUU member. He was the ASUU president in 1986 until when the Union was briefly banned in 1989 and he was detained. That year, he won the Commonwealth Prize for Literature for his book ‘Heroes’.

Efforts to reach the ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Isah Fagge failed as he didn’t pick his calls nor respond to text message sent to him.

ASUU chairman, ABU Zaria, Dr. Mohammed Kabiru, described the death of the professor as a sad loss to ASUU struggle.

He described the professor as one of the few academicians who have remained true to the struggle for development of tertiary education since the military era without abandoning the struggle for political appointment.
