Federation Cup winners, FC IfeanyiUbah yesterday defeated NPFL champions, Enugu Rangers 5-4 on penalties to win this year’s Super Cup also known as Charity Shield.
Kick off of the match played at the mainbowl of the Abuja national stadium was delayed for close to one hour due to the late arrival of the Minister of Youth and sports Barrister Dalung.
When it eventually started, the encounter proved to be a drab show as both sides struggled to impress on the bumpy pitch of the abandoned Abuja National Stadium.
FC IfeanyiUbah ended the first half with only ten men as one of their defenders was sent off by the centre referee Benjamin Odey for dissent.
Resumption of the second half was again delayed due to the unveiling of the jerseys to be used by the referees in the 2017 football league season.
When the second half resumed, Rangers tried to make good use of their numerical advantage but the ‘Nnewi millionaires’ stood their ground thereby forcing the match to end on penalties.
In the eventual penalty shootout, FC IfeanyiUbah boys held their nerves as they converted all their kicks while their opponents missed one.
FC IfeanyiUbah were therefore crowned over all champions of the 2016 football season.
The Super Cup match also served as the official opening of the 2017 football season in Nigeria.
