The Edo State command of the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency says it arrested 1,247 suspected drug dealers between 2015 and 2018 in the state.
The commander, Mr Buba Wakawa, who disclosed this during the inaugural meeting of the Edo State Drug Control Committee (ESDCC), said 186,501 kilograms of various narcotic drugs were seized during the period.
He said 164.6 hectares of cannabis plantation were destroyed; 726 persons with drug abuse problems were counseled, while 156 drug dealers were convicted in the state.
He commended the State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, for his political will in the campaign against drug abuse in the state.
On his part, Governor Obaseki, said his administration will work assiduously to reduce drug and substance abuse in the state.
According to him, drug control guarantees public health and safety, active and vibrant workforce as well as a secured future for the youth.
Represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr David Osarumwense Osifo, the governor noted it is dangerous for any government to treat the problem of drug abuse with kids’ gloves.
