Tension has returned to Umunya in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State following the bail granted to three suspects fingered in the attempted assassination of the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Kris Onyekwuluje, by a magistrate’s court.
It was reported that the traditional ruler, Igwe Onyekwuluje, escaped the assassination attempt after men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) foiled it. The attempt was planned to be executed by 10 men from Umuleri and Aguleri hired by some people from Umunya allegedly led by two APGA chieftains.
The SARS operatives, it was learnt, on a tip off by one of those contracted to carry out the assassination, swung into action, and trailed the suspects’ bus leading to the arrest of three of the men allegedly masterminding the murder plan while others escaped.
The three suspects, Ekene Okonkwo Ejeh, a member of BoT APGA faction of Maxi Okwu, Maduka Udemezue and Okey Emelife, were arraigned before an Nteje magistrate’s court on a one-count charge of conspiracy. They were however granted bail on health grounds by the administrative magistrate, Chukwudi Ibemesi.
Before adjourning the case to 14th September, 2015, the presiding magistrate warned that all parties should be calm over the matter.
But shortly after the court session, chairman of the Youths Association of Odumodu Ani and Odumodu Enu villages of Umunya community, Nze Okwudili Nwankwo, raised alarm that one of the chief suspects, Ekene Okonkwo Ejeh, had allegedly threatened his life and those of others in breach to the warning.
Meanwhile, the police have placed some persons who are at large on its wanted list. They are Chukwudozie Udemezue, Charles Menankiti, Sunday Esedo, Ozoekwe Nwoye, Gregory Emeneogha, Obed Nweke, Denis Nweke, John Udokwu, Eric Morah , Patrick Oramulu , Edwin Nwankwo, a native doctor and Ozoekwe Nwoye among others.
When contacted, Igwe Kris Onyekwuluje, expressed shock, saying that plans to kill him for being a peacemaker for the progress and development of Umunya community was foiled. He however refused to speak further on phone as the matter was still under police investigation and in court.
“Yes that’s true and I can’t believe this is happening. I am a peacemaker and will stand by the peace,’’ he said.
The officer in charge of SARS, James Nwafor, refused to speak but confirmed there was an arrest by the police and that there was an alleged plan to murder the Igwe of Umunya , Igwe Onyekwuluje but would not speak further .
When contacted, the state PPRO, Okechukwu Ali, a DSP, said he had not been briefed officially on the matter yet.
