Without any doubt, the Emir of Dutse, Alhaji [Dr] Muhammed Nuhu Sanusi is an intensely proud lover of the game of golf. Not only does he own an exquisite full blown 18-hole golf course but the unfathomably nice ruler is equally the chairman of the Golf Course Owners of Nigeria [GCON].
Naturally, when news reached him that Daily Trust will be organizing a five-star Pro-Am golf tournament in honor of the nation’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, it is expected that a blutter of excitement could envelope him. This was exactly what happened. The Emir offered such huge smile. But when he was informed that his lush golf club, the Royal Dutse Golf Club, would host one of the six regional qualifying rounds for amateurs from the North West zone, the Emir practically jabbed the air like a golfer who has just holed a birdie from a ridiculous hazard. About 350 amateur golfers from Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara and Sokoto states will besiege Dutse for a thrilling two-day qualifying round that would produce only 40 qualifiers. The Dutse event will hold between December 17 and 18.
“Something good is really happening to the game of golf in Nigeria”, Emir Sanusi disclosed. “With our President being so honored through the game of golf will truly open wide doors for millions of youths who want to play the game but cannot afford it. I have over the years been championing a cause where every Nigerian kid who wants to can have access to a golf course. This tournament, without any doubt will be a pointer to this”.
Since there is no sport no sport that is as solitary as golf or any sport that harmonizes lives like golf, the Emir is particularly moved that the choice of Dutse will truly electrify the Emirate like it was the case when the Governor’s Cup played out there some months back,
“We always pray for this type of opportunity where our people mingle freely with Nigerians from other parts”, the Emir said. “This will also impact on our commerce. Our Governor will equally be proud of. I can assure you that those coming will meet a lush and well maintained course on ground”.
