Customs kills suspected rice smugglers’ informant in Jigawa

The personnel of the Nigeria Custom Service (NCS) on Monday killed one Tasiu Muhammed in Babura town of Jigawa State, for allegedly serving as an informant to rice smugglers along Babban Mutum area of  Nigeria-Niger border.

Daily Trust gathered that the deceased, who was on the wanted list of the Service, was said to have been very conversant with the illegal routes along Babban Mutum border in Katsina State which also passes through Babura town in Jigawa State.

The deceased was alleged to have made the federal government operation for total closure of the border against rice smugglers very difficult for the personnel of the service.

He was accused of not only informing the smugglers on the movement of the border patrol team, but also giving them information on alternatives routes through the porous border line.

The personnel of the service were said to have accosted the suspected informant, who was killed at Anguwan Gawo, some kilometers away from Babura, had not returned the calls put through to him.

At the time of filling this report, the spokesperson of Kano-Jigawa area command of the NCS, Isa Danbaba, had not picked the calls put through to him nor replied the text massage sent to him.

But the Jigawa State Police Commissioner, Bala Zama, confirmed the incident, while speaking to newsmen in Dutse.

“The relatives of the deceased reported to the police in Babura that a border patrol team had killed one of their relation, Tasiu Muhammad,” Zama said.
