Criminal activities have intensified in Kakuri area of Kaduna South Local Government after the police recently raided a criminals’ den in a place called Jungle, Daily Trust has gathered.
The criminals smoked Indian hemp openly, terrorised residents at will, raped women and also robbed people of their belongings. It was learnt that many people living around the jungle have relocated to safer places for fear of attack.
Daily Trust reports that Kakuri residents are under serious threat as a result of the nefarious activities of hoodlums and criminals, making it imperative for the police to raid the area.
“It’s like the police raid just provoked the criminals,” a resident who preferred anonymity said.
“You need to come and see what is happening in the area now. I can say that everything is worse now than before. The criminals have intensified their activities since the police raid and they carry dangerous weapons which makes it difficult for anyone to confront them. Sometimes also, they fight among themselves but at the end of the day, it is the innocent people that are mostly affected. That is why some people are already relocating to places where they feel safer,” he said.
He said government should endeavour to take measures that will curtail criminal activities in the area, adding that the issue of occasional raids was only worsening the situation rather than curbing it.
Another resident told Daily Trust that apart from the Jungle, hoodlums and other criminal elements have also taken over Kakuri bus stop where they attack passengers, drivers and other road users.
The source said the hoodlums also smoked Indian hemp on the main road and took other hard drugs, noting that a boy was recently stabbed by one of the hoodlums during a free for all.
When contacted, the Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Kaduna State Governor, Samuel Aruwan, said the government is taking seriously the issue of security and will do all it takes to support security operatives in maintaining law and order.
He said the criminal activities in Kakuri area and other parts of the state will be effectively tackled as the state governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufa’i is deeply committed to ridding the state of criminals, armed bandits, cattle rustlers and insurgents.
