Youths in Plateau State yesterday, agreed to champion the fight against community transmission of the dreaded coronavirus pandemic in the state.
They said the move followed the realisation of how various communities in the state neglected the government safety measures against the disease.
They added that a collaboration between religious groups would help complement the government’s effort against community spread.
This decision was taken during a one day workshop on COVID-19 and inter-religious dialogue for Faith-Based Organisations supported by King Abdallah Bin Abdul-Azeez Center for Inter-Religious and Inter-Cultural Dialogue, held in Jos North Local Government Area.
The President of National Council of Muslim Youth Organisation (NACOMYO), Sani Suleiman Maigoro, explained the importance of engaging religious groups, which would further enlighten their followers at various worship centres on the need to adhere to the COVID-19 safety measures.
“Religion encourages us to maintain good hygiene in our homes and places of work and to respect people in authority. It is the responsibility of the religious leaders to educate their followers on any societal development and we believe that all the safety measures are in line with teachings of the religions.”
In his remarks, the Director of Justice, Peace and Reconciliation Movement (JPRM), Mrs. Justina Nwobia, charged youths to work together in their various communities to disabuse the minds of the people that were yet to believe in the pandemic.
