Court convicts commercial motorcyclist for theft, assault on policemen

An Igbosere, Lagos, chief magistrate court has convicted a 37-year-old man who stole an Android phone and inflicted tooth-bite injuries on men of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in the process of arresting him.

According to the police, the convict, Afeez Olalekan, committed the offences on Wednesday June 5, 2019 during the Id-el-Fitr holiday at Obalende, Lagos, at about 5.30am.

Rapid Response Squad men on patrol were said to have sighted Olalekan chasing some men with a chair, and when the patrol team leader, Inspector Ogunyemi Michael, wanted to save the situation and collect the chair from him, Olalekan became violent.

In the process, the convict inflicted serious tooth bites on Inspector Michael’s leg, as well as bit the other RRS men on different parts of their bodies.

Olalekan, who is married with a child, was charged with stealing a Techno Android phone valued at N30,000, property of Hassan Mohammed of No. 12 Oduwa Street, Obalende.

When the two-count criminal charge was read out to Olalekan, he pleaded guilty as charged.

Magistrate A. A. Famobunso has fixed June 14, 2019 as judgment day for sentencing.
