Cop injured in shootout with kidnappers dies

A police sergeant with the Inspector General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT) at the weekend died as a result of bullet wounds he sustained during a shootout with a kidnap kingpin in Sapele, Delta State.

The deceased, Sergeant Lanre Sanusi, was shot in the stomach while another Sergeant Agunbiade Adebayo sustained minor bullet wounds.

Both of them were rushed to the intensive care unit of the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DESUTH), Oghara.

It was gathered that Lanre died on Friday after the team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari was attacked by kidnappers in the town.

It was gathered that Sergeant Lanre was one of the leading figures who tracked kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onuadike alias Evans to his Lagos home from where he was arrested.

Daily Trust reports that the team had trailed some of the kidnappers who abducted four Britons on humanitarian service in the state.

According to sources, the IRT team based in Benin City, the Edo State capital was with one of the arrested kidnappers who was taking them to a criminal hideout for the arrest of other suspects in Sapele when they were attacked.
