Conjoined twins: UniAbuja hospital lauded for successful surgery

The father of separated conjoined twins, Mr. Ferdinand Ozugwe, has commended the management of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), Gwagwalada, for the successful surgery on his children.

Ozugwe, an unemployed youth from Delta State, made the commendation shortly after the twins were discharged by the hospital on Wednesday.


City News gathered that a team of Nigerian doctors had on October 30, successfully separated  a set of conjoined twins through surgery, four months after they were delivered at another hospital.

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of UATH, Dr Bisallah Ekele, said the babies were stable and in good condition.


According to him, the surgery was carried out by two teams of pediatric surgeons, a team of plastic surgeons, two teams of anesthetic and specialist nurses.

The father of the twins said his wife gave birth to twins at the St. Mary’s Catholic hospital in the area, which he said doctors that discovered that they were conjoined from the heart to the stomach.

“It was at the St. Mary’s hospital we were referred to the University Teaching Hospital on June 11 and the hospital nurtured them through x-rays and series of test until they were successfully separated, “ he said.

He added: “I wish to express my profound gratitude and appreciation to the teaching hospital for carrying out a successful surgery on my conjoined twins,” he said.

Ozugwe, however, called on the government and well-meaning Nigerians to provide him and his wife with a job to enable them bring up the twins.
