Confusion over Lagos budget presentation

There was confusion yesterday at the Lagos State House of Assembly as journalists who had gathered to report the official presentation of the 2019 budget proposal by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode were asked to leave because the lawmakers were unaware of such an event.

Reporters attached to the governor’s office had received messages Sunday evening, urging their prompt arrival yesterday for the event.

An aide of the speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, later told the journalists, who had waited for over seven hours, that no budget presentation ceremony was taking place.

“The speaker is in a private session with other lawmakers. He said he was not aware of any budget presentation today. He also said he does not want to see any gathering at the lobby,” the speaker’s aide said.

House Committee Chairperson, Hon. Funmilayo Tejuoso, did not respond to phone calls and messages sent to her on the issue.

The lawmakers had on January 10 insisted on the governor’s physical presence at any formal presentation of the budget proposal.

They had argued that while it might be true that the governor had submitted the proposal to the Assembly, he must be physically present to present it.
