Speaking during a four-day training for selected 25 community health workers in Asa local government area of the state, the Senior Technical Officer Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), Nigeria Office, Dr. Hauwa Mohammed, lamented that Nigeria still has a high rate of maternal mortality.

Mohammed said that the training was for health workers that were involved in taking care of pregnant women, women in labour and how to carry out immediate care of new born baby.

“We trained doctors, nurses, midwives and community heath extension workers, all the people that work in maternity unit. We have been running this training in Kwara state since 2014.

“So far, we have worked with seven local governments, and we have trained all their health workers We are going to work in nine local government areas, which means that at the end of the programme, we would have covered all of Kwara state.

Mohammed also said that the NGOs planned to set up a skill attendance and emergency obstetrics care centres in Asa council area, adding that parts of the equipment used for the training would be donated to the centres.

The health expert, however, called on government to intensify efforts at equipping its hospitals for better health care delivery.
