Speaking at the ceremony, the Economic and Commercial Counsellor at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Li Yuan, expressed gratitude to the Nigerian government for its cooperation from the start to the finish of the project.

Mr. Yuan said, “China is a reliable ally of Nigeria and will continue to work with the Government of Nigeria to ensure that Nigerians at the grassroots are not forgotten.”

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of StarTimes Nigeria, Mr. Tunde Aina, said the installations would guarantee access to information in the villages.

Mr. Aina said the project was part of effort to get information across to the local communities and that the project which would be maintained by StarTimes for five years in the various villages was a grant from the Chinese government which was implemented by StarTimes.

On his part, StarTimes Nigeria Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. David Zhang, while formally handing over the project, said the 1,000 Digital Television Villages in Nigeria was a significant achievement and a milestone in the access of digital television service in Nigeria.

Mr. Zhang commended the Nigerian government, state governors and officials, as well as the Chinese government for the cooperation, support and guidance extended to StarTimes Nigeria; being the implementation agency for the project.

He said this was not only promoting access to digital television across the country, but also enhancing people-to-people cultural exchange.

Daily Trust reports that during the installation, more than 1,000 maintenance technicians acquired specialised skills in digital television equipment installation and maintenance and they will play a pivotal role in ensuring the project is sustained.
