The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) on Thursday clarified that contrary to media reports over purported renewal of certificate of the defunct Chachangi Airways, the airline is not currently engaged in any form of operation.
Spokesman of NCAA, Mr. Sam Adurogboye stated this in response to the report suggesting that there has been controversy over the renewal.
“The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) wishes to state that there is no controversy at all concerning the Air Operators Certificate (AOC) of Chachangi Airways”, he said in a statement.
The regulatory authority stressed that “at present and quite evidently Chachangi Airways is not carrying out any form of operation. In other words, everything concerning the Airline has been archived”.
It would be recalled that Chachangi, a one-time budget carrier in Nigeria, was grounded in 2013 after its fleet depleted to one aircraft.
The NCAA said going by the provision of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs) 2015 Part 220.127.116.11 (a), the airline cannot be operation.
Part 18.104.22.168 (a) of Nig.CARs read: “Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, no AOC holder may conduct a kind of operation for which it holds authority in its operations specifications unless the AOC holder has conducted that kind of operation within the preceding number of consecutive calendar days specified in this paragraph: For scheduled operations- 30 days; For non – scheduled operations- 90 days except that if the AOC holder has authority to conduct scheduled operations, and has conducted scheduled operations within the previous 30 days, this paragraph does not apply”.
“In other words it is not obtaining the AOC that is the most important, what defines an airline is the validity of its operational specifications”, the NCAA explained.
