The Laila Dogonyaro Islamic Centre Abuja (LDIC) has graduated its first set of Quranic recitation students, at its maiden Walimatul Qur’an.
The graduation, which took place over the weekend in Abuja, had the four graduands recite different chapters of the Holy Quran. The centre is named after one of the first female activists in northern Nigeria who championed and agitated for the participation of women in politics, Laila Dogonyaro.
Speaking to Daily Trust at the event, one of her daughters, Hajiya Binta Dogonyaro, said the Islamiyya school started on October 21, 2017 out of the need to portray Islam in a positive light.
She lamented that there “is always a lot of negativity associated with Islam like Boko Haram, ISIS all over the world, and I believe that Islam is a beautiful religion and we have every right to promote it in a positive way.”
